SAPC Certification is For You
By Courtney Byam, Certification Coordinator

Attention all of those in an Administrative Support Position…budget cuts and lay offs got you thinking? Wondering what you can do to make yourself even more valuable to your employer?  Let MIEM help you find the answers to these questions.

In addition to offering a variety of educational and informative professional development activities to those within Michigan School Districts, MIEM also has their very own certification program; a program that is specifically designed with you in mind.

In these trying times, who knows what these economic hiccups will bring us, but we can all agree that we may need that little extra something to demonstrate our commitment to continuing our education. The School Administrative Professional Certification program (SAPC) does just that! Its goal is to provide information and training for you that is specific to your job function while providing a basis for advancing the profession throughout Michigan. SAPC is intentionally geared towards those individuals who are currently working in the Central Office, Building level secretarial positions or in any other type of administrative support role.

By enrolling in the SAPC program, you will expand you knowledge, skills and confidence as an administrative professional. In addition, you will receive ongoing training and support from experienced instructors all the while becoming part of a statewide network of those that share your interest in advancing their profession.

How do I get started you ask? The process is as simple as 1,2,3….4!!

  1. Visit our website at www.gomiem.org
  2. Click on the SAPC link located in the Certification tab. This will take you to an informational area devoted to the SAPC program.
  3. Click on the Letter of Application. (At this point you may also want to check out the Grandparenting provision. If you have 6 years experience within a school district you may be eligible to have a certain amount of the 13 required classes WAIVED!!!)
  4. Fill this out and send along with the application fee to us here at MIEM!

Once we receive it, we will enroll you in the program and send you a packet of information outlining the program. At this point, any classes that you have already taken will be applied accordingly.

That’s it…who knew such a simple process could potentially pave the way for better performance evaluations, pay increases or just the satisfaction of continuing your education and professional development.

If this sounds like something that might be of interest to you and you would like to discuss it further, please do not hesitate to contact Courtney Byam, Certification Coordinator.

The First Annual Energy Solutions Symposium, brought to you by MSBO, MASA and MASB is slated for Thursday, March 12 at Forest Hills Fine Arts Center in Grand Rapids.

You will learn everything you need to know to help your school reduce energy consumption, and find more sustainable ways of doing business.

MATH Summit: Making Math Success A Reality In Michigan
March 30, 2009 • 8:15 am-4:00 pm • Kellogg Center, MSU

Michigan’s graduation requirements have the education community charged up and trying to develop plans, programs, and methods to insure that standards are met and that students are learning a rigorous curriculum that is needed for success in our 21st Century. It is strongly recommended that districts bring teams of 4-6 to this event, including superintendents, curriculum administrators, building administrators, counselors, math teacher leaders, and math education support personnel.

Presenters include:

  • Mike Flanagan, State Superintendent will share his view of the importance of student success in Math.
  • Tom White, (former Michigan School Business Official Executive Director – now working with the Confucius Institute) will share his National and International Perspective.
  • Thomas Bullock from the University of the District of Columbia will help guide administrators/teachers/math support personnel to find the paths and tools that will work in their district to ensure all Michigan’s children succeed in Math.

Questions that will be answered for you are:

  • How do school leaders create and sustain a context for learning that puts students’ learning first?
  • How do school leaders organize and manage the school to support teaching for learning?
  • What structures and processes exist to support shared leadership in which all staff has collective responsibility for student learning?

The goals for this one-day summit are to have participants:

  • Leave with a heightened understanding of the Michigan Merit Curriculum Mathematics Requirements
  • Learn about models of promising practices
  • Take away practical tools and resources for implementing programs and strategies

Collaborate with your own district team to begin or enhance your action plan. A final guided team activity will offer structures to support shared leadership for student learning. MDE, MASSP, MIEM, and The Education Trust sponsor this summit.
